The University of the South. popularly known as Sewanee, is consistently ranked among the top tier of national liberal arts universities. Sewanee is committed to an academic curriculum which focuses on the liberal arts as the most enlightening and valuable form of undergraduate education.

 

Founded by leaders of the Episcopal Church in 1857, Sewanee continues to be owned by 28 Episcopal dioceses in 12 states. The university is located on a 10,000-acre campus atop Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau between Chattanooga and Nashville. It consists of

a College of Arts and Sciences with approximately 1,300 undergraduate men and women and a School of Theology which includes about 800 graduate students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees.

 

The University has an impressive record of achievement-----23 Rhodes Scholars and 23 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients have graduated from Sewanee. More than 70 percent of the college's students pursue graduate studies. A high percentage of undergraduates who apply to medical and dental schools and a high percentage of students who apply to business and law schools are accepted. Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa Omicron Delta Kappa are among the national leadership and scholastic honorary organizations at Sewanee, and the campus includes 11 national fraternities and six local sororities.

 

Undergraduates can pursue 34 majors. In addition, the course of instruction offers study aboard programs which are available year-round; a 3/2 engineering program, with agreements at Columbia University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Vanderbilt University, and Washington University in St. Louis; and a natural resources program, unique among national liberal arts universities, which offers instruction in national resources, geology, and forestry.

 

Students and faculty members take advantage of Woods Laboratories, which provide excellent facilities for the study of biology, physics, chemistry and psychology, and the duPont Library, which houses more than 450,000 volumes. The Sewanee Review, published by the University, is the oldest continuously published literary quarterly in the United States and one of the best journals of its kind.

 

The Sewanee community offers an outstanding cultural and social environment which contributes directly to an enrichment of the educational experience. Students work with faculty, staff, administrators and community members as volunteers in the Sewanee Volunteer Fire Department and the Emergency Medical Service. There are also a variety of service organizations on campus which impact both collegiate and community life.

 

Extra-curricular activities are an integral part of the Sewanee Experience. Seventy percent of the university's students participate in a strong intramural sports program. The Sewanee Outing Program features caving, kayaking, rappelling, camping, ice skating, canoeing and sailing. A riding program offers instruction in dressage and stadium and cross country jumping with University or personal horses. And the University has a full and varied schedule of cultural opportunities, including the Performing Arts Series, duPont lectures, and the popular Festival of Lessons and Carols, presented by student musical ensembles in all Saints' Chapel, the center of religious life on campus.
